HIMITSU WINS SURFACE MAGAZINE’S INAUGURAL TRAVEL AWARD
FOR BEST BAR iN THE WORLD
Atlanta’s Japanese Craft Cocktail Lounge Chosen for Inaugural Tribute to the Best in Travel and Design

ATLANTA (Oct. 17, 2017) –  Himitsu co-owner Farshid Arshid is pleased to announce his luxurious Japanese craft cocktail lounge in the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood is one of only 21 global winners of the inaugural Surface Travel Awards – a tribute to the best and most thoughtfully conceived spaces and products, as well as the architects, designers and other innovators who inspire, empower and connect travelers. Himitsu, designed by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio in London, triumphed in the bar category and is being recognized for shaping the world around us aesthetically.

“It is quite an honor to be recognized among such incredible global competitors,” says Arshid. “Tom is absolutely a master in his craft, and we are proud to be his first State-side hospitality project. The meticulous attention to detail that went into Himitsu’s design parallels our unique level of service and commitment to presentation.”

Himitsu and the other spaces, places and faces that took home custom-crafted Cosentino trophies are featured in the second annual October Travel Issue of Surface (on newsstands now) and were also celebrated during an intimate cocktail reception on Oct. 4 at La Piscine at Hôtel Americano, led by Surface’s travel editor, Nate Storey, and former director of editorial product development at Travel + Leisure, Peter Frank. Grammy Award winner Solange Knowles served as the Master of Ceremonies.

The winners were chosen out of 500 submissions across 21 categories by an esteemed jury of design and hospitality professionals including Dana Cowin, media personality and former editor-in-chief, Food & Wine; Elizabeth Diller, architect and founding partner, Diller Scofidio + Renfro; Murray Moss, design entrepreneur and co-founder, Moss Bureau; Roopal Patel, SVP, Fashion Director, Saks Fifth Avenue; Michael Rock, founder, 2x4; Troy Conrad Therrien, Curator, Architecture and Digital Initiatives, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and Adam Wells, head of design, Virgin Galactic.

Himitsu’s darkly theatrical speakeasy décor is inspired by the rich colors and textures of Todd Murphy’s 12- by 16-foot painting 'King of Birds’ and is furnished with sculptural pieces selected to create distinct silhouettes. Dixon and his team designed a raw yet sophisticated aesthetic, playfully offsetting slick metallic against rougher, natural materials while retaining industrial features and exposed structural details. An elegantly lit copper bar is the centerpiece of the 1,300-square-foot space. Smoked mirror and natural marble table tops sit on industrial Tom Dixon roll bases to form a tactile landscape of surfaces. The discreet staircase which runs along the natural cork-clad textured back wall of the bar gives a sense of exclusivity as guests are taken up to the upper level mezzanine lounge. An installation of Tom Dixon Melt pendants draws inspiration from molten metal and melting lava, emitting an attractive, mildly hallucinogenic light and casting an ethereal luminosity on the surroundings.
